The Archivists Who Exchange Minds Across Time
The Great Race of Yith does not require spacecraft to cross the universe. Its minds travel through time and exchange bodies with intelligent beings in a chosen age. The race once occupied conical organisms on prehistoric Earth and built a vast city beneath the Australian desert. A displaced modern human awakens inside an alien body, receives supervised access to archives, and is required to record the languages, politics, and knowledge of the captive’s own period. When the exchange is reversed, memory is usually blocked, leaking back only through nightmares and temporal dislocation.
“The Shadow Out of Time” portrays these archivists as severe but not delighting in cruelty. They gather past and future because they already know their civilization will be destroyed and have selected another species into which their collective will escape. Immortality here is not spiritual ascent but evacuation on an immense scale. Their library resembles both humanity’s dream of total knowledge and an imperial museum no contributor freely entered. Behind every invaluable record stands someone whose life and body were temporarily requisitioned.
