The Colour That Fell Outside the Spectrum

A meteorite falls on the Gardner farm west of Arkham. Samples shrink in the laboratory, and globules within them eventually vanish. The following year produces enormous fruit that cannot be eaten, while plants display a hue no observer can accurately name. Contamination enters the well, livestock, and members of the family. Life seems to be drained from within by an invisible appetite. At last an eruption of alien radiance rises into the night, though a small portion falls back toward the well and waits beneath land designated for a reservoir.

“The Colour Out of Space” refuses to turn the unknown into a god suitable for sculpture. It has no face, language, priesthood, or legible intention; even “colour” is only the nearest word human senses can offer for something outside their spectrum. Later taxonomies sometimes place it inside a divine hierarchy. The original operates more like ecological contact, corrupting soil, food chain, kinship, and memory together. It frees the mythos from its tentacled emblem and returns to a deeper terror: a visitor needs no malice when its mode of physical existence is enough to make our world unfit for life.
