American folklore has no unified pantheon; its mythology is scattered across colonial farmhouses, treelines along back roads, and late-night forum posts. The thirteenth child of Mother Leeds in the Jersey pines, the talking spirit on a Tennessee farm, the headless rider of the Hudson Valley — the legends of the colonial and frontier eras grafted the ghost stories of European settlers onto the wilderness of a new continent. Their tellers were newspaper editors, county sheriffs, and neighbors around a fire.

The twentieth century organized American legend around the sighting: the spade-hooded figure on a Flatwoods hilltop in 1952, the silvery beings besieging a Kentucky farmhouse in 1955, the red-eyed Mothman chasing cars outside Point Pleasant in 1966, the great footprints at Bluff Creek. Front pages of local papers, police reports, and plaster casts became this tradition's scripture; cryptozoology grew up around it, and Bigfoot, Ogopogo, and the Chupacabra traveled from rural hearsay to national news to town statues and annual festivals.

The internet accelerated the continent's myth-making to a matter of days. Two photoshopped images on the Something Awful forums on June 10, 2009 produced Slender Man; a single composite photograph by Trevor Henderson raised Siren Head in 2018; an anonymous paragraph on 4chan in May 2019 opened the yellow rooms of the Backrooms. These figures have exact creators and birthdates, yet they are rewritten by millions of hands like genuine folklore. From Bloody Mary's bathroom mirror to the black-eyed children asking to be let in, the temperament holds steady: these stories happen at your own front door, and the teller always insists a friend of a friend saw it happen.
