Faceless Wings Descending from Dream’s Cliffs
Night-gaunts arose from recurring childhood nightmares reported by Lovecraft and later received their fullest place in The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath. They are utterly black, horned, bat-winged, and equipped with barbed tails, but their faces possess neither eyes, nose, nor mouth. Even menace occurs in absolute silence. They dive from dangerous regions such as Mount Ngranek, seize travelers with limbs and tails, and carry them toward stranger, deeper provinces of dream.
Facelessness does not leave them without relationships. Later in the story, ghouls employ night-gaunts as an aerial host, and Carter’s role changes from captive to passenger. Like dream itself, they promise no stable moral alignment. When they take you, every loss of altitude is terror; when their direction matches yours, those wings cross roads unavailable to waking geography. Later art often adds shining eyes or jaws, weakening the original conception. Their clearest power lies in the blank: no expression reveals intention, and only the receding cliff tells the traveler that another depth of night has opened.
