The Night People Beneath the Last Cemetery

Lovecraft’s ghouls inhabit cemeteries, crypts, and the underground passages of Dreamland. They are dog-faced humanoids with rubbery skin and hooflike feet, feeding upon the dead. “Pickman’s Model” first brings them beneath Boston through a painter’s canvases; The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath reveals that Pickman has completed his transformation and now acts as a guide among them, leading his companions to aid Randolph Carter.

They are horrifying without being simply evil. Ghouls keep friendships, exchange information, and accept danger in a rescue. The line between humanity and their community is permeable: a person who haunts graves and imitates their life may gradually become one of them. Monstrosity becomes a social and bodily migration rather than an intruder waiting outside the door. Ghouls occupy an uncommon grey province in the mythos. Death is their food, but loyalty continues to matter; the grave, where civilization deposits what it excludes, opens into a road traveled by another people.
