The Second World Beyond Seventy Steps of Sleep

The Dreamlands are not a private illusion that dissolves upon waking but a second world with persistent geography, inhabitants, and history. Dreamers descend through the gates of deeper sleep and travel among Ulthar, Celephaïs, and Dylath-Leen, while the gods of Earth dwell at distant Kadath. Cats cross worlds in moonlight, ghouls and night-gaunts command subterranean and aerial routes, and the black ships of moon-beasts pull harbor commerce toward crueller frontiers.

In The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, Randolph Carter seeks a sunset city seen in dreams and learns that its beauty was composed from memories of his New England home. The Dreamlands therefore possess a different register from documentary cosmic horror. Danger remains immense, but longing, friendship, beauty, and adventure have not been entirely driven away. The realm also shows that Lovecraft did not create one perfectly unified pantheon. His Dunsanian dream tales and Cthulhu documents were stitched together by authors and readers afterward. The seam now belongs to the tradition, while the distinct colors on either side remain worth seeing.
