The First File That Moves Between Blinks
SCP-173 is a sculpture made from concrete, reinforcing bar, and applied coating. It remains motionless while held in direct sight. When blinking, obstruction, or procedural failure interrupts observation, it changes position faster than ordinary monitoring can follow and attacks by breaking the neck or strangulation. Personnel therefore enter in groups and announce their blinks, turning the smallest involuntary human action into a precise containment ritual.
Moto42 posted the short file to 4chan’s paranormal board in 2007. It became the seed of the SCP Wiki and its collaborative form: numbering, object class, containment procedures, and clinical voice grew outward from a sculpture that moves outside attention. The old article used a photograph of Izumi Kato’s Untitled 2004, but that image was never covered by the SCP open license and was removed from the official page in 2022. Myth Atlas neither preserves nor redraws that sculpture. Its original geometric plate represents only the mechanism of observation as a seal. Respecting that boundary is itself an essential part of documenting the tradition completely.
