Their Heels Face Forward and Lead the Tracker Backward

Mmoatia are small forest beings whose feet face opposite to human feet, so their tracks send a follower the wrong way. They inhabit woodland beyond settlement and possess gatherings, songs, and rules of their own. Laughter sounds behind a bush; parted leaves reveal only deeper green. The beings are said to know herbs, healing, and dangerous knowledge. They may teach a person they have selected, yet punish spying, disrespect, or disclosure. Medicine brought home from an encounter is both gift and debt, bound to conditions that cannot be spoken away.

In the famous purchase of stories, Nyame requires Ananse to capture a mmoatia alive. Spider makes a gum-coated wooden figure and offers it yams. When the figure refuses to answer thanks, the forest being grows angry and strikes it, losing both hands to the adhesive. The comedy preserves a serious point: failed etiquette can change a relationship instantly, and a clever person can weaponize etiquette. Later translations call mmoatia fairies or dwarfs, aiding comparison while pressing them into European molds. Their reversed tracks advise distance. A roughly human shape does not mean that these beings travel through existence in the same direction.
