One Name for a Night Full of Accusations
Aswang has no species description that can be checked feature by feature. In the Visayas, Bicol, and elsewhere, the word points toward different dangers: a neighbor by day who becomes dog, pig, or great bird at night; a predator using a tubular tongue against the unborn; a corpse thief replacing the body in a coffin with a banana-stalk likeness; or a person accused of possessing harmful magic. The manananggal is often included within this broad class while retaining its distinctive divided body. Local experience, Catholic demonology, and colonial medicine accumulated around the term until it became wider than any one monster.
The darkest motion may be accusation rather than transformation. An isolated woman, a person refusing communal expectations, or an unfamiliar midwife could be pushed by rumor under the name aswang. Fear policed social boundaries and injured living people. Against it, households assembled an arsenal of garlic, salt, stingray tail, reversed clothing, and prayer, while the rooster drew a line toward dawn. Capiz became known in popular culture as an aswang homeland, and cinema and radio turned regional lore into a national horror emblem. The word survives because no face can contain it. Each era deposits the hunger it least wants to acknowledge inside the same unmeasured stomach.
