The eight-foot woman who laughs 'po po po'
Hasshaku-sama is a female apparition roughly eight shaku, nearly two and a half meters, tall. Her clothes change from sighting to sighting, a white dress in one account, mourning black in another, but the wide-brimmed hat and the low, popping 'po po po' from beneath it are constant. She haunts a single rural district, penned in by four Jizo statues at its boundaries, and when she takes a liking to a young person, that person is carried off within days.
The original story was posted on 26 August 2008 to 2channel's Sharekowa thread series ('scary stories that are no laughing matter'). The narrator, a high schooler summering at his grandparents' village, hears the popping sound in the garden and sees an impossibly tall woman over the hedge. His grandfather goes pale, summons an old woman from a neighboring hamlet, and shuts the boy in an upstairs room sealed with paper charms, salt heaped in the corners, a small Buddha image in a wooden box. In the night something calls through the door in his father's voice; knuckles rap the window glass between bursts of 'po po po.' At dawn the extended family arrives in nine cars, hides him in the back seat of the middle one, and runs the convoy out of the village while chanting, and through his fingers he glimpses the woman standing on a paddy ridge. He is told never to return. Years later, the story ends, his dying grandfather asks to see him, and the family phones only to insist: do not come.
The tale is one of the summits of 2channel-era composed horror, endlessly reposted, read aloud, and drawn, entering English creepypasta as Hachishakusama. The post never names the village, which is precisely why it can sit just outside anyone's hometown.
