Summoning Hanako follows a ritual that varies little across Japan: after school, go to the girls' toilet on the third floor of the old wing, knock three times on the third stall from the end, and ask, 'Hanako-san, are you there?' If a small voice answers 'I'm here,' open the door and you may see a girl in a red suspender skirt with bobbed hair. What happens next depends on the school: dragged into the bowl, pulled into another world, or nothing at all. Her backstory shifts by region too, a child killed in an air raid while hiding in the toilet, a victim of abuse, a murder in the school building.
Case material collected by the folklorist Tsunemitsu Toru traces the type to around 1950, when an Iwate school already spoke of a Hanako in the third stall. In the mid-1980s the after-school dare spread explosively through elementary schools nationwide, and after Tsunemitsu's Gakko no Kaidan series began publishing in 1990, 'school ghost stories' became a full media genre with Hanako as its headliner: the films Gakko no Kaidan and Toire no Hanako-san both reached cinemas in 1995, followed by decades of anime, manga, and variety-show revivals.
The school toilet is the last enclosed, solitary, drain-fitted space in a child's day, and most cultures keep a ghost there; Korea has its own toilet spirits and the anglophone world summons Bloody Mary in a mirror. What marks Hanako is how tame she became, in many tellings no more than a small voice saying 'I'm here,' a nearly gentle instrument for measuring courage.
