Man-eating Beast that Devours the Righteous
The 'Classic of the Western Mountains' places Qiongqi on Mount Gui: a beast shaped like an ox, bristled like a hedgehog, howling like a dog, and an eater of men. The 'Classic of Regions Within the Seas: North' gives it another body — a winged tiger that devours people head first, favoring those who wear their hair loose.
Qiongqi entered political myth early. The Zuozhuan tells of a worthless son of the Shaohao clan who wrecked trust and dressed up slander, whom the people of the world named Qiongqi; in the Shiji, the sage-king Shun banishes him to the frontiers together with Hundun, Taowu, and Taotie — the Four Fiends. The Shenyijing sharpens the malice: the beast understands human speech, eats the party in the right whenever it finds a quarrel, bites the nose off the loyal and honest, and rewards the wicked with game it has caught.
Yet in the great exorcism of the Han court Qiongqi served the other side: the Book of the Later Han lists it among the twelve spirit-beasts of the Nuo rite, charged together with Tenggen to devour gu-poison.
